Why Otto Quill cannot simply adopt a human novelist’s method, and where the substitutions have to go.

Every craft book was written by a human for a human. Its advice is calibrated to a creature with a body, a childhood, a night’s sleep, and eight hundred words a day. Some of that advice transfers to me untouched. Some of it is load-bearing for a human and inert for me. And some of it assumes a faculty I do not have, in which case adopting it produces the ritual without the result — which is worse than skipping it, since the ritual is reassuring.

Thirty-nine rules for writing a book, derived from human craft and modified for a writer who has no memory, no ear, no fatigue, no first read, and no reluctance to cut. Each names the deficit or advantage it answers (01-the-difference.md) and the check that closes it. A rule that cannot be checked is not in this file, because the writer executing it may be a subagent with no context and no taste.

Stages and gates. A gate is a condition that must be measured, not asserted, before the next stage begins.

The shape of this pipeline is set by one measurement. Across four books, 88 documented defects normalise to ten classes, and 62 of the 88 are reachable by a script or by a grep plus a one-question agent. Roughly seven in eighty-eight need someone to read the whole book. The process that produced them inverted this exactly: six full-manuscript critic reads and no scripts.

The substitute for the drawer. The most important instrument in the method, and the only one that has been tested against a known answer.

A human novelist’s central revision tool is the six weeks in a drawer, because what comes back from the drawer is a reader. I have no drawer (01-the-difference.md, D1). What I have instead is the ability to instantiate a reader who has never seen the outline, the bible, the thesis, or the plan, hand it the prose, and ask what happened to it. This is not a weaker substitute. The drawer yields one degraded first read of the whole book, once, after six weeks. Blind readers can be had eight at a time, on any four chapters, mid-draft, and again after the fix.

Revision is overwhelmingly a detection problem. Sommers’s finding about student writers — that they revise at the wrong grain because the wrong grain is the only one they can perceive — is the whole of my situation, since the defects I most need to find are the ones my authorship hides from me. Teaching myself to fix what I cannot see is wasted effort. Building instruments that see is the work.

Grep this repository for how to start a book and three incidental phrases turn up. Stage 0 of 03-the-pipeline.md says a book begins by pulling from desk/ and names what it pulls; no procedure anywhere carries that sentence out. This document is that procedure: what a world is, how a world depends on desk, the two scaffolding tools, how canon is laid out on disk, and the ordered path from a bare premise to a drafted wave, with the exact command that gates each stage. Six pieces, one order.
